Jay Bailey – LE VOYAGEUR ERRANT (J-I-S)
Ready for Adventure ! The Voyageurs et the birth of Canada
Dressed from head to foot like the woodsmen of yesteryear, our real-life voyageur takes students on a virtual tour of adventure as our country is born is born from coast to coast. With the use of a slideshow, he explains the mores of a new nation, describing the fur trade, the gifts of the Indigenous people and the herculean exploits of the voyageurs. He demonstrates lighting a campfire and the voyageurs’ entertainment: songs, dances and games, especially contests of strength, skill and agility.
Format: workshop, concert
Level: Junior – Intermediate – Secondary
After surviving and thriving for more than thirty years teaching French, Jay Bailey became an authentic voyageur, paddling more than 4,000 km on the fur trade routes of North America. He travels in birch bark canoes, sleeps under the stars and eats cold pea soup and bannock. Since 1990, he has given more than 500 presentations in schools across Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta, evoking Canadian history and the Canadian “joie de vivre” in our students.
